SMS is still the most prevalent messaging service

With 61% of respondents stating they own a smartphone today, 91% of this demographic reported using SMS regularly, despite having the ability to access different OTT/IM messaging services on their device.

The follow results where found from a survey on 1,000 mobile US device users:

  • 65% of the most prolific SMS users stated they needed SMS today with 45% of these saying they would be lost without it – even though they have easy access to OTT/IM services on a smartphone.
  • Reliance on SMS was particularly high among younger users aged 18-25 (79%).
  • When asked about preference of SMS over OTT/IM messaging services, smartphone owners said the main reasons for using SMS were core service capabilities, including speed of delivery (47%), reach (43%) and reliability (38%).

Small businesses using mobile marketing see jump in new business

69% of small businesses consider mobile marketing crucial to their growth in the next five years, but a majority of them have yet to significantly employ mobile marketing tactics, according to a new study of 500 U.S. small business owners by online marketing firm Web.com Group Inc.

“With more and more consumers specifically searching for local businesses on their mobile devices, it is imperative that small businesses invest in a mobile presence,” says David Brown, chairman and CEO of Web.com. “Having a mobile presence can be a huge competitive advantage for small businesses trying to attract local customers by instantly introducing a potential customer to their business’ products and services in a mobile-enhanced way.”

While 60% of small businesses surveyed have a conventional web site, only 26% have a web site with some mobile-optimized pages, the study finds. And only 14% have a stand-alone mobile site. Those who are catering to mobile consumers are reaping benefits: 84% of small businesses with a mobile presence report increases in new business activity directly related to their mobile tactics, the study says.

BuzzCity, has today issued its latest quarterly report on the current trends dominating the mobile advertising industry.

One of the key findings has been the rise of the smartphone – smartphones now account for more than 32% of the phones that ads are served to.

According to BuzzCity’s report, mobile advertising in the UK grew by 157% across the past year, with the UK demonstrating strong growth (23%) during Q1. With increased smartphone adoption showing no signs of slowing down, there will undoubtedly be an impact on increased m-commerce activities.  Based on BuzzCity’s data the UK, United States Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand and South Africa are in a good position for growth.  At least 25% of mobile users in these countries use smartphones and they are very active users, generating more than a billion ads per quarter in each country.

Mobile-connected devices to reach 10B by 2012 

More than 10.3 billion mobile-connected devices will be available by 2016. According to the report, the expected mobile growth will stem from three increasing factors – content, new devices and more sophisticated features.

“It is an enormous opportunity for marketers to increasingly test mobile marketing possibilities, ranging from SMS to full-blown cross-channel campaigns and activities where mobile plays a central role,” said Kevin Petschow, spokesman for Cisco, San Jose, CA.

Mobile mania

Mobile data traffic overall is expected to increase a whopping 18-fold by 2016, showing how consumers are consistently and steadily using their mobile devices more.

For marketers, the data is proof that mobile is a growing channel to target a broad group of consumers.

Additionally, the research proves that carriers and manufacturers need to up their game with increased coverage and Wi-Fi for consumers so that brands have the opportunity to interact with users via mobile marketing.
